Excerpt:

“Someone poisoned your drink,” Derek said. “I haven’t tested the others yet.”

Mun motioned to the priest. “If not for Priest Derek, you would have been as Miss Pomeroy.”

A flame of temper sparked. “Please tell me you beat the barmaid half way to death and back again.”

Mun smirked. “We have no proof she is responsible.”

“I don’t give a whit who’s responsible!” She stumbled to her feet, the room doing an odd shift that sent her staggering backwards. Derek steadied her. “If someone is trying to poison us, then my hands around their throat will be reason enough for them to want us dead: Fear for their own life.”

“You should rest,” Derek told her as he tried to get her to sit. “You aren’t making sense.”

“Bah!” Para attempted to push his hands away but only succeeded in sending herself off balance and nearly falling backwards.

“Par, sit,” Mun ordered.

She glowered at him but complied.

“I will question the barmaid and any other in the kitchen. You will be led upstairs by Milord Priest and go to bed so you can recover.”

“I—”

“Par.”

Her mouth clicked shut as she continued to glare at his stern countenance, his stony gaze not easing one bit.

“Para,” Derek said, “the medicine can only continue to work you free from the poison if you rest.”

Grumbling, she acquiesced and allowed herself to be led upstairs into her room. It took her quite a time to make it up the stairs, growing winded and dizzy after only three or four steps and needing a rest. Derek urged her to take her time, and at one point near the top she could have sworn that he wore the luminescent glow she had seen at the pond while he prayed for Alicia Pomeroy. The direct result was a lessening to the dizziness and the nausea and being able to reach her bed.

Derek helped her off with her boots and then arranged the covers over her. “Rest now. I will check on you later to ensure the poison is gone.”

“Turn about is fair, eh?” she asked as he turned away.

He faced her again, smiling. “It seems so, doesn’t it?”

“Don’t think you will keep me abed in the morning, Milord Priest.”

“Of course not. Now rest. Milord Meek and I will question the staff.”

“You do that, and don’t let him be soft on them,” she called after his exiting figure.

He shut the door without comment.
