What’s Love Got To Do With It?

This is another installment in the ChristianWriters Blog-Chain. Additional articles can be found in the link list on the bottom.

Let’s get one thing out in the open before this article goes underway: I consider myself a romantic. At times, I can be one of those whom look through “rose-colored glasses”. Perhaps that is why I tend to be an optimist of the highest order. A peace-maker. Anything else goes against the very heart that God created in me.

Love is a strong motivator for all my characters. If they have been torn to the quick by the pain of a lost love, it is my heart’s desire to repair that hurt and weave for them a new tale. More than anything I want to write the perfect happy ending for each character I imagine.

This is my platform: relationships and the importance of communication. After all, how can I not understand and admit the importance of communication and love in relationships when I myself have experienced the blessing? Though my heart had always longed for a special someone in my life, God didn’t weave him into my life until my 30′s. Until that time, He asked me to be content. To continue to pray for the man He selected for me, but to be patient until the time he entered my life’s story.

It is a difficult thing to not let our hearts get carried away with the idea of being in love. That was my task until love came for me, and it challenged my very core to be more than what I had been to that point in my life. I came to understand love and its power on a different scale.

“Love is a many splendored thing.” The Kingdom of God, Francis Thompson

It motivates one to kill, to die, to suffer, to cry, to feel joy, despair, bliss. Love is of God, propelling Him down the path of death so we could live free from the power of sin. Love seems to have everything to do with everything, and yet it is one of the most poignantly abused words.

People utilize the word ‘love’ to get what they want with little regard to the feelings and futures of those they abuse. Others use the word ‘love‘ as a tool to propagate a tainted view of tolerance.

Why do we sully such a romantic and pure concept as love? It may be simply because we do not truly understand the depth and layers which encompass love as intended by God; as exampled by Christ and so many of his followers since. So perhaps we should ask ourselves: What does love have to do with my life?

Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. — 1 John 3:18

Are we sacrificing time, money, or material things to demonstrate our love of others? Do we step outside of what we want for ourselves in order to give joy to someone else?

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear … — 1 John 4:18

Do we boldly walk forward in the desires of our heart in order to reach out and touch the hearts and souls of others? In art. In music. In the written word. All are our tools to convey love, passion, devotion, compassion, care. Do we use these tools to their utmost?

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. — 1 Peter 4:8-9

That is a wonderful statement, “love covers over a multitude of sins”. How else could someone like me receive the future promise of sitting at the feet of Christ in Eden after all is said and done? I certainly haven’t earned it on my own merit, no matter how wonderful I think I am. My attitude toward others leaves a lot to be desired, my constant struggle. My cross to bear.

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. — Corinthians 13:7-8

In this verse is my desire for each and every romance novel I write. Unfortunately, I often fall short in my conveyance of this passion. One day I will get it right. Until that time relationships, communication, passion, and all the aspects of love will continue to be woven into the fabric of my characters’ lives. Even the villain, for I bet if I look hard enough into his/her past, love had everything to do with their current place.

I am a writer. I adore the spinning of the unwritten tale – that lesson waiting to be divulged to others. Each day a new story beckons. One last happy ending. My characters have a life outside of my own, and I always learn from their destiny.
