Writer's Call

I am a writer.

My life would be empty without this call. There would be no purpose. no ending to guide my daily struggle. No story toward which to strive. Each day something beckons, and that – I know – is the waiting tale.

One last happy ending.

My characters have a life outside of my own. They have dreams and failures that motivate the like of which I cannot even dream. They have a path I would not dare follow. In that respect I have something to learn from their waiting destiny, and it is that destiny I strive to tell, to the fullest extent, so that someone like myself – sheltered in Christiandom – can learn something about the other side.

Janine, Marcus, the unnamed villain… all of which have taught me something of the darker side of destiny.

I am a writer, and I adore the spinning of the unwritten tale – that lesson waiting to be divulged to others. What tale will this day reveal? I have but to open my heart and mind and listen.

High On A Mountain

High on a Mountain

High on a Mountain, by Tommie Lyn

High On a Mountain, by Tommie Lyn, has been an incredible read. The characters, the conflict, and the setting draw you in with a strong and steady grip and don’t allow your attention to wander. You empathize, even with the villain, and find yourself rooting for these characters as if they were your true friends.

Edgy action/adventure romantic fiction is what I would call this. A fantastic balance of chick lit and male bravado mixed together with a wonderful blend of description and action. HoaM is a smooth read that keeps you turning the pages. Definitely a must read, especially if you enjoy those stories reminiscent of Rob Roy or Braveheart.

The Discomfort Zone

Outside the Zone

The blank page. At times, an unsurmountable horror for writers.

Discomfort ZoneFor some, new and old, this blank page is that first, gaping step into the discomfort zone. It is the leap into the maw of the unknown. We’ve dreamed about it, agonized over it, and dedicated ourselves to the journey beyond the terror of that first paragraph. For others, the blankness  is little more than an annoyance. It might entail only a mocking whisper as they tap their pen against the starkness, searching their mind for that first poignant sentence.

I remember my own experience as a new writer more than 22 years ago. The empty page beckoned to me, and I couldn’t wait to fill its whiteness with the story bursting inside my heart. With pen in hand, I scribbled “That’s not how you begin a story, Vicki,” and my first YA novel, The New Road, was born. There has been little pause since.

The most memorable instance of tumbling into the discomfort zone found me when I acted as the Junior Director of our church’s drama team, The New Life Players. I was tasked with writing an entire scene for an evening production, including a unique song. My younger brother was chosen to play the main character throughout the production, an unbeliever who then met five unique individuals who offered him their testimony. Part of that witness/testimony was the song. Agony ventured to new heights when I discovered that I would be the person acting and singing the part that I scripted.
